Day 17. Split (2016). Directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

Split (2016) score: 74%

While I’m glad that M. Night Shyamalan has started making great films again, which arguably started with The Visit, I don’t think Split’s as brilliant as his debut (but it’s still brilliant).

Its tone is joyously oscillatory. Some might argue that Split can’t decide what it wants to be, because it is quite dark and sinister but often intentionally silly too. I think it works, despite being initially unsure if Shyamalan had made another hit or another howler. Whatever your stance is, hopefully you won’t deny that James McAvoy is mesmerising, particularly in his increasingly ambiguous chemistry with his doctor.
