The Lion King (1994) score: 93%
The Lion King really is a near-perfect Disney film and a near-perfect film regardless of genre, but Disney’s head at the time thought Pocahontas was a more likely hit and there was a huge rivalry. What an idiot.
There are many reasons why The Lion King is supreme. Its story runs parallel with Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the music’s in the capable hands of Elton John and Hans Zimmer, and the voice cast is astounding. Not to mention the hilarious comic relief (something Pocahontas lacked) that’s much needed after the emotionally-scarring death of Mufasa. Bambi’s mum, eat your (not beating) heart out.
