Spy (2015) score: 74%
Spy is an entertaining riff on the spy genre (funny that) with a surprisingly hilarious Jason Statham and a transformation from the normally lovable Rose Byrne. She achieves new highs of cruel bitchiness.
The script and direction, both courtesy of Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat), are super tight, even with the clear focus on improv. This separates it from Adam McKay’s Anchorman and Step Brothers. Adam McKay and Will Ferrell’s focus is on wringing every gag for what it’s worth regardless of overall cohesiveness, which mostly works well, but Feig’s focus is stringing the gags together with a digestible plot.
