Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) score: 85%
Sam Neill is endearing as the weathered Hec, and young Julian Dennison is great fun as Ricky Baker, Hec’s rotund companion in the forest, in one of the most well-rounded stories I’ve ever experienced. It thankfully doesn’t end with schmaltz, which it could easily have done. Instead it ends as it begins – bravely, and with a sense of humour.
I can’t wait to watch it a second time. It’s easily digestible, which often isn’t a sign of quality. However, in this case, it is. It’s a warm film with a heart but it isn’t afraid to have a dark laugh.
