Day 35. Godzilla (1998). Directed by Roland Emmerich.

Godzilla (1998) score: 49%

1998 Godzilla’s problem is that it operates as a disaster movie that features monsters, rather than a monster movie that features disaster.

It feels like an eight year-old was given $130,000,000 to make a carbon copy of Independence Day that features dinosaurs instead of aliens. Oh wait, that’s what actually happened.

This is popcorn cinema at its most basic. Characters regularly patronise us by stating their intentions out loud, and Godzilla is just a cover image for generic trashing of New York. It’s cheap and cheesy, but try not to enjoy Matthew Broderick being chased by mini Godzillas in Madison Square Garden.
