Day 36. Godzilla (2014). Directed by Gareth Edwards.

Godzilla (2014) score: 81%

It’s clear to see why Gareth Edwards was chosen for Rogue One. This Godzilla is a far more artistic affair than Roland Emmerich’s mess and moreĀ faithful to Godzilla’s origins.

The colour palette of every scene should be a reference point for film students. Most of the film has a subdued dark grey tinge which simultaneously feels hauntingly beautiful. The terrifying bridge scene is one standout example of this – one of many.

And unusually for an expensive monster movie, it doesn’t feel like this was made with a major Hollywood studio behind it. It feels like a personal passion project.
