John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) score: 79%
The first film rode on its resplendent fight choreography, a specialty of first-time director Chad Stahelski who was also Keanu Reeves’ stuntman for The Matrix. Thankfully his return to the director’s chair doesn’t merely mean more of the same. It’s a more complicated (but still simplistic) affair than Wick 1, and despite acting as exposition for a third film it manages to bear its own very sharp and polished teeth.
Trashy cinema doesn’t necessarily have to be bad. When you have conviction, confidence and style like John Wick does, there’s no risk of your attention waning. Bring on John Wick: Chapter 3.
