Day 40. Magic Mike (2012). Directed by Steven Soderbergh

Magic Mike (2012) score: 66%

I’ve resisted Magic Mike for some time. If you know me then you’ll know I have some disdain for Steven Soderbergh and his generally forgettable films.

Magic Mike, however, is in the company of Erin Brockovich, Ocean’s Eleven and Behind the Candelabra. But not Traffic. It’s good, but not that good.

Though it does have an unexpectedly tight script that’s filled with quotable one-liners. And while Channing Tatum’s infamous nudey dancing scenes are predictably as technically brilliant as his equally infamous Lip Sync Battles, it’s Matthew McConaughey’s performance that saves Magic Mike from becoming throwaway (but still guiltily enjoyable) trash.
