Aliens (1986) score: 87%
James Cameron’s Alien entry is a far less subtle beast than Ridley Scott’s. It’s also less artistic and more Hollywoodised, and in the film’s first half I can never decide if I’m enjoying it anywhere near as much. But then the second half kicks in and it’s so much fun.
Having said that, I’m also tempted to think the impact of some of the scary moments is weakened by the desensitizing, bludgeoning effect of all the ensuing pandemonium.
But that’s what James Cameron always does, and he does it well. Michael Bay should have learned something from him by now.
