Beauty and the Beast (2017) score: 70%
I can’t deny that this is an astonishingly beautiful film. Regardless of how unique the artistry is, it’s bedazzling.
But I think it could have done with being more daring. The Jungle Book remake managed to be both faithful to the original and create some of its own imagery, but the only original things this Beauty and the Beast brings to the table are some new songs. And despite the fact Alan Menken’s back, having worked on the original Disney film, they’re not particularly memorable, even with lyrics by Tim Rice. And let’s just say Emma Watson’s singing hardly boosts their appeal.
