Day 57. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011). Directed by Brad Bird

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) score: 74%

The Mission: Impossible series is one of those rare beasts. It gets better and better with each entry, rather than the normal thing where each one becomes increasingly awful and governed by studio bosses instead of the filmmakers themselves.

With the awe-inspiring and nauseating efforts by Tom Cruise atop the Burj Khalifa, this Mission: Impossible set an incredibly hard task for Rogue Nation in terms of spectacle. While Michael Nyqvist’s villain Hendricks is at the duller end of the bad guy spectrum and the nuclear launch codes storyline is a little retreaded, the perfectly orchestrated action makes up for it.

  1. I caught this on telly a few months back after giving it a miss at the cinema. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it in a disposable kind of way. But what struck me was how it felt like I was watching more of an action/comedy than a spy thriller. Anyone else get that?

    1. Since the third one, they’ve definitely become more actiony and less spy thrillerish. I suppose you could argue they have become too indistinct now and more mainstream but I think I enjoy them more as a result. There aren’t many film series out there though that I would say the same thing for.
