Jurassic Park (1993) score: 92%
Jurassic Park is a near-perfect thing. How did the sequels get it so wrong?
The characters bounce off one another brilliantly and make rounded progressions in the story (while I won’t say I enjoy the kids being basically tortured throughout, they do learn an important lesson about being less annoying). Also brilliant are the special effects. They’re timelessly sublime. CGI is used sparingly when puppets wouldn’t have been practical, instead of all the time like it is in the sequels.
I can’t think of another film where I get such a tingly feeling when the John Williams theme kicks in.
