Ghost in the Shell (2017) score: 60%
I don’t think the issue with this iteration of the manga classic is with its reported whitewashing. It’s with how devoid of personality the first half is and how all the actors involved (even Scarlett Johansson) seem as though they’re going through the motions of a read-through instead of acting for the final film. The lack of distictiveness is also due to a generic use of excessive neon to remind you it’s set in the future.
The second half does pick up though. The finale is very exciting and everybody looks as though they’ve spontaneously acquired rockets up their arses.
