Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) score: 59%
I’m a bit biased because of the soft spot I have for the original, and for trashy, ridiculous Roland Emmerich films in general, but I really don’t think this sequel is as bad as critics have wagered and promptly confirmed upon watching.
Sure there’s no Will Smith, but he’s not the big box office draw he used to be anyway. The film doesn’t suffer in his absence because there’s hypnotic destruction aplenty. It’s even pretty self aware and takes aims at itself, so it’s at least more intentionally laughable than 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow (but I still love them).
