Day 66. The Shawshank Redemption (1994). Directed by Frank Darabont

The Shawshank Redemption (1994) score: 98%

If you were to write an essay on the irrelevence of the Academy Awards, you could easily use Shawshank as your main point of analysis. As brilliant as Forrest Gump is, it didn’t deserve to win six Oscars at the same time that Shawshank won none.

The performances are simply unforgettable. It’s crammed with fearsome characters that make Andy Dufresne’s prison sentence almost as horrid to witness as it would be to endure it for real. Bob Gunton as Warden Norton is particularly sinister.

In short, if you don’t like The Shawshank Redemption then you have some redeeming to do.
