Day 71. Esio Trot (2015). Directed by Dearbhla Walsh

Esio Trot (2015) score: 78%

Esio Trot is one of Roald Dahl’s simplest and most child-friendly stories, but this made-for-TV adaptation is totally accessible. Credit should be given to Richard Curtis and Paul Mayhew-Archer for a brilliant script that keeps everything light and naive for the kids but with enough room for some adult-friendly jokes and scenarios. It’s an extremely faithful film which manages to sit very comfortably in its own very British and coy skin.

This tortoise-filled story also contains endearingly lovely performances by acting legends Judi Dench and Dustin Hoffman, who, I’m not ashamed to admit, both made me cry on separate occasions.
