The Shallows (2016) score: 59%
The Shallows is more jumpy than scary. And while it’s fun, I’m not convinced that ‘fun’ was the overall tone the filmmakers originally intended. As a B-movie The Shallows works well, especially with Blake Lively’s cheap but enthusiastic performance, but as a single-location horror movie it doesn’t work quite so well.
There are hints of 127 Hours and Buried, but ultimately the shark is extreme to the point of comedy and Lively’s actions to escape said shark are almost superhuman. Even if B-movie territory was indeed where the film intended to reside, while vaguely entertaining, it feels like a missed opportunity.
