79. Fast & Furious 8 (2017). Directed by F. Gary Gray

Fast & Furious 8 (2017) score: 75%

You could be forgiven for finding F8’s increasingly fantastical nature utterly laughable, but in the context of the Fast & Furious canon it’s nothing but thrilling. That’s because, much like the Bond movies, they don’t abide by normal cinematic rules. Their own rules are established within the first five minutes and they’re adhered to strictly. If Skyfall wasn’t a Bond film, people possibly wouldn’t rate it so highly.

As such, F8 is a near-masterpiece: less silly than F7 and with more new characters that thankfully don’t reek of that new-character whiff of desperation. I was grinning ear-to-ear from start to finish.
