83. Alien: Covenant (2017). Directed by Ridley Scott

Alien: Covenant (2017) score: 62%

After Ridley Scott apologised for Prometheus, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Covenant was going to be a terrifying return to form, even if it did feature Danny McBride.

However the effects are cheap-looking, uncharacteristically and frustratingly so considering the revolutionary effects of Scott’s original. The visuals are further bolstered by amateurish cinematography that doesn’t employ the scariest possible angles and which is as hyperactive in the action as a Looney Toon on acid.

It’s not terrible, but Ridley Scott is better than this. The characters are dull, the story is Hollywoodised and there’s a general whiff of money-making half-heartedness.

  1. For me this film showed that Ridley Scott ignored all the criticism of Prometheus and just went ahead and made Prometheus 2 like he wanted. Except he bunged a couple of aliens in the mix and on the title to shut people up. Covenant is marginally better than Prometheus but that isn’t saying much. Scott seems hellbent on continuing to undermine his own masterpiece as he has said he had another 5 films in the series planned. Yay.
