When rebooting, it helps to change characters or actors or even to just consider a light tonal shift. Otherwise, it’s not so much a reboot as a rehash. Unfortunately this fifth Pirates movie is the latter because everything in it is paraphrased from previous films.
While there are some spectacular sequences and great comic moments, the old characters feel shoehorned in and the new (thinly drawn) characters exist only so that the film can pretend it has something organic to offer.
It also feels like it was machine-gunned in the editing room to compensate for previous outings’ lack of succinctness.
