87. Notting Hill (1999). Directed by Roger Michell

Notting Hill (1999) score: 68%

While Notting Hill is funny, mostly thanks to the silly Welsh tit (played unashamedly by Rhys Ifans) who houseshares with Hugh Grant’s stiff English tit, it’s held back by the fact that Julia Roberts’ uber-American actress primarily exists to force Grant to retreat into himself and become more distinctly English by comparison than is bearable. On more than one occasion I screamed with frustration inside my head, “JUST HURRY THE FUCK UP AND SAY HOW YOU FEEL YOU THICK ENGLISH PLANK!” – a sign of its success in making me feel for the characters’ plight but not for the characters themselves.
